Team Philippines Secures Four Medals at World Games in Chengdu

Team Philippines has achieved its goal at the World Games in Chengdu, China, earning two silver and two bronze medals with two competition days remaining.

The silvers came from Kaila Napolis in the women’s -52kg ju-jitsu and Chezka Centeno in the women’s 10-ball billiards. The bronzes were won by Carlos Baylon Jr. in men’s sanda 56kg wushu and Aislinn Yap in women’s combat 80kg sambo.

“The World Games opened our eyes to what is ahead of us in each sports competition… They really fought hard. They all deserve a standing ovation,” said Chef de Mission Stephen Arapoc, who also heads the Muay Thai Association of the Philippines.

In Friday’s lone result, Kim Mangrobang placed 18th in the women’s individual duathlon with a time of 1:32:10, six minutes and 39 seconds behind gold medalist Anahi Alvarez Corral of Mexico. Teammates Merry Joy Trupa (19th) and Bea Quiambao (26th) also completed the race.

The Philippines will next compete in the duathlon mixed relay at the Xinglong Lake Hubin Arena and in the men’s equipped lightweight powerlifting event through Regie Ramirez.

The country has previously won two World Games gold medals — Carlo Biado in men’s single nine-ball billiards (2017, Poland) and Junna Tsukii in kumite women’s 50kg karate (2022, USA).
