‘Talaga Ba?’ Dennis Padilla hits back at kids’ ‘toxic dad’ allegations amid ongoing feud

Dennis Padilla has once again broken his silence—this time firing back at allegations from his children branding him a “toxic” father. In a phone interview with Ogie Diaz, Padilla questioned the label with a pointed “Talaga ba?” as he defended himself against years of emotional distance, renewed now by the drama that unfolded during daughter Claudia Barretto’s recent wedding.

The embattled actor-comedian, long estranged from his children with Marjorie Barretto, claims he’s simply a father “longing for love”—not the villain he’s been painted to be.

Padilla, who arrived at the wedding ceremony of his daughter, Claudia Barretto, last April 8, was expecting reconciliation or at least recognition, but left the venue fuming and heartbroken. Instead of walking his daughter down the aisle, as many had assumed he would, that role was taken by his ex-wife, Marjorie Barretto, in a symbolic move that seemed to publicly solidify where Claudia’s loyalties lie.

Following the wedding, Padilla launched a tirade of emotional outbursts, claiming he was treated as nothing more than a guest at his own daughter’s milestone moment. “Ayoko na. Sabi nila ako ‘yung toxic. Talaga ba?” he told entertainment reporter Ogie Diaz in an emotional phone interview uploaded on YouTube. “A father who is longing for love from his children… do you call that toxic?”

The comments were part of a larger narrative Padilla has been pushing—that he has been trying to mend fences with Claudia, Julia, and Leon, his children with Marjorie. He emphasized the numerous public and private attempts he’s made over the years to reconnect, from sending greetings during birthdays and holidays to reaching out to their partners. But now, he says, he’s done. “I’m ending my ties with them,” he previously declared, vowing to carry their “disrespect” to the grave.

But social media wasn’t buying it.

Rather than sympathy, Padilla’s comments sparked a backlash. Critics accused the actor-comedian of emotional manipulation, with many pointing out that true fatherhood is not measured by grand gestures on milestone days, but by consistency, presence, and accountability. “Stop making your kids responsible for your feelings,” one commenter said. Another added, “He made Claudia’s wedding all about him. That’s not love—it’s ego.”

Others slammed Padilla for overshadowing the bride’s special day with his public grievances. “You were lucky to be invited,” a netizen pointed out. “Most estranged fathers wouldn’t even make the guest list.”

Despite the public drama, the Barretto women have maintained their silence. Claudia, Julia, Leon, and Marjorie have yet to respond to Padilla’s accusations, possibly choosing privacy over spectacle. However, Dani Barretto, Marjorie’s daughter with actor Kier Legaspi, appeared to throw subtle shade with a supportive message to the newlyweds: “Focus on your happiness. Don’t let anyone dim your light.”

As the Barretto children continue to stay quiet, many believe their silence speaks volumes—especially in the face of a father who continues to demand love on his terms.

With the wounds now reopened, and the public watching every post, one thing is clear: in this family drama, the lines between love, resentment, and public spectacle are becoming harder to separate.
