The stage is set for a historic week of cycling action as the 45th Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) Track Cycling Championships and the 14th Asian Para Track Cycling Championships get underway on March 25 at the Tagaytay City Velodrome in Cavite.
Top sports officials from the region and the Philippines will lead the opening rites, with ACC president Dato’ Amarjit Singh Gill and Philippine Sports Commission chairman John Patrick Gregorio joining Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino for the ceremonial launch of the twin tournaments.
The championships mark a major milestone for Philippine cycling, as it will be the first time in 30 years that the country will host the prestigious annual event, last staged on local soil in 1995. It will also be the first major international competition to be held at the newly built Tagaytay City Velodrome, a UCI-standard 250-meter indoor track facility expected to showcase the country’s growing capability to host world-class sporting events.
“This is the biggest international track cycling event that Tagaytay City, and the country for that matter, is hosting in three decades,” Tolentino said in a news release on Monday.
He added that this year’s edition is also shaping up to be one of the largest in the history of the ACC Track Championships in terms of participation.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 9 a.m., with the first races firing off an hour later. More than 600 athletes from 16 Asian nations are set to compete in both the track and para track divisions, turning Tagaytay into the center of Asian cycling until March 31.
Host city mayor Brent Tolentino has thrown full support behind the event, alongside key partners including the Philippine Sports Commission, MVP Sports Foundation, Sports Plus PH, Toyota, and Peak.
A total of 44 gold medals will be contested in the ACC Track Cycling Championships, while 30 gold medals will be up for grabs in the para track competitions, which will run simultaneously throughout the week.
Athletes in the ACC meet will battle for honors in the individual and team pursuit, sprint, keirin, elimination race, omnium, points race, scratch race, Madison, and the 1-kilometer event for both men and women.
Meanwhile, the para track program will feature the individual pursuit, 1,000-meter time trial, sprint, elimination, scratch race, mixed team sprint, and tandem sprint.
Seeing action in the championships are teams from Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Macao China, Malaysia, China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and host nation Philippines.
With a record field, a state-of-the-art venue, and continental titles on the line, the Tagaytay championships promise to be a defining moment not only for Asian cycling, but also for the Philippines’ push to become a premier destination for international sport.
