Ateneo de Manila University standout Mishka Sy continued her golden run, capturing her third individual gold medal in the UAAP Season 88 swimming championships after ruling the women’s 400-meter freestyle at the New Clark City Sports Hub in Capas on Friday night.
The Season 87 MVP clocked 4:37.90 to top the field, with De La Salle University’s Jie Angela Mikaela Talosig taking silver in 4:43.08, and University of the Philippines (UP) rookie Aubrey Tan securing bronze in 4:47.48.
Sy, who earlier swept the 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley events, now leads the overall women’s standings with 57 points. Talosig and UST’s Shairinne Floriano are tied at second with 37 points each. Floriano captured the 100m butterfly title in 1:03.56, while Talosig, last season’s top rookie, struck gold in the 800m freestyle with a time of 9:50.35.
UP also made waves as Season 86 Rookie of the Year Quendy Fernandez claimed the 200m backstroke gold in 2:18.84. The Lady Maroons further boosted their medal haul with victories in the 50m breaststroke (Thanya Dela Cruz), 200m medley relay (Kate Dequina, Dela Cruz, Nikki Sarmiento, and Abi Perez), 400m freestyle relay (Atasha Dela Torre, Colette Adanza, CY Delos Santos, and Camille Buico), and 800m freestyle relay (Grace Ang, Juliana Villanueva, Dela Torre, and Aubrey Tom).
In the men’s division, Ateneo cemented its dominance with three more gold medals to stay firmly on top with 213 points, ahead of La Salle (139), UP (105), and UST (76).
After his 100m butterfly triumph, rookie TJ Amaro returned to the pool to anchor Ateneo’s 400m freestyle relay team—composed of Rafael Barreto, Paolo Labanon, and Charles Ticbaen—to another gold finish. Reigning Rookie of the Year Miguel Barreto added to the Blue Eagles’ tally by ruling the 400m freestyle, while La Salle rookie Peter Dean topped the 200m backstroke and UP’s Geoffrey Liberato prevailed in the 50m breaststroke.
