Susie Ibarra Becomes First Filipina American to Win Pulitzer Prize for Music

Filipina American composer and percussionist Susie Ibarra has made history as the first Filipina American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, earning the prestigious award in 2025 for her groundbreaking composition Sky Islands.

Premiered in the summer of 2024 at the Asia Society in New York, Sky Islands is a rich and expansive work that draws from the rhythms and textures of the Philippine mountain rainforests. The Pulitzer jury hailed the composition as one that “challenges the notion of the compositional voice,” applauding Ibarra’s masterful integration of kulintang rhythms, bamboo percussion, and ancestral melodies with contemporary classical elements.

Beyond her innovative sound, Ibarra’s win is a powerful cultural moment for the Filipino American community, particularly for artists striving for representation in the classical music landscape. Her music doesn’t just push sonic boundaries—it celebrates heritage, ecological consciousness, and identity.

Ibarra is also known for her advocacy in cultural preservation. She co-founded Song of the Bird King, a platform dedicated to collaborating with Indigenous communities in preserving traditional ecological knowledge and music. Through this work, she champions not just sound, but the stories and landscapes that inspire it.

As she continues to perform and collaborate on international stages, Susie Ibarra’s Pulitzer win is a reminder that the voices of the diaspora are not only relevant—they are redefining the future of classical music.
