Surprise witnesses possible in Duterte impeachment trial

The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte may still include witnesses not listed during pretrial, Senate Secretary Renato Bantug said Monday.

Bantug, who acts as clerk of court of the impeachment court, said both the prosecution and defense may reserve the right to present additional witnesses.

He said the party seeking to call an unlisted witness must notify the other side at least three days before the scheduled appearance.

Bantug said the procedure is allowed under court rules and may also be followed in the impeachment court.

The prosecution and defense had already submitted summaries of witnesses in their pretrial briefs.

The impeachment court earlier completed the marking of documentary evidence for Articles III and IV, which involved alleged bribery in the Department of Education and an alleged threat against President Marcos, First Lady Liza Marcos, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Bantug said the marking of evidence for Articles I and II, which covered alleged misuse of confidential funds and unexplained wealth, was expected to be finished Monday.

After the pretrial conference, Bantug said the transcripts and evidence markings would be reviewed before a pretrial order is drafted for submission to the impeachment court, possibly by June 25. The trial proper is set to begin on July 6.
