Super Typhoon Champi intensifies outside PAR, packs 195 kph winds

Super Typhoon Champi continued to intensify over the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines, packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 240 kph, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its 24-hour Tropical Cyclone Formation Outlook issued at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, PAGASA reported that Champi was located approximately 1,615 kilometers east of Central Luzon, near coordinates 15.4°N and 136.7°E, as of 2 a.m.

The powerful tropical cyclone was moving west-northwestward at 20 kph while remaining outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Satellite imagery showed Champi maintaining a well-organized circulation over the Philippine Sea, with extensive cloud formations surrounding its center.

Although the super typhoon remained far from the Philippine landmass, authorities continued monitoring its movement and possible development in the coming days.

PAGASA has yet to indicate in the provided outlook whether Champi will enter PAR or directly affect any part of the country.

Residents, particularly those in eastern coastal areas, are advised to monitor official weather bulletins and prepare for possible changes in weather conditions.

The public is encouraged to follow updates from PAGASA and local disaster risk reduction and management offices for the latest information on the super typhoon’s track and intensity.
