The desire for fairer, whiter skin has long been prevalent in the Philippines, where skin-lightening products (SLPs) remain widely popular. With the increasing number of brands in the market, local companies now compete alongside international brands, offering consumers a broad range of choices.
A recent study from the University of the Philippines Manila – College of Medicine has found a connection between the use of SLPs and psychological distress among Filipino emerging adults. Conducted between January 2023 and January 2024, the study focused on individuals aged 18 to 29 and revealed that frequent use of SLPs is linked to decreased levels of depression (20–24%) but also to increased anxiety levels (11–18%).
According to Dr. Zypher Jude Regencia, one of the study’s authors, individuals in this age group are more vulnerable to psychological distress, particularly depression, anxiety, and stress. The findings suggest that while SLP use may contribute to a temporary boost in mood, it could also be associated with heightened anxiety, possibly due to societal beauty standards and personal insecurities.
