Through three games in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup, co-leader NorthPort has already equaled its total of three victories from the previous Governors’ Cup.
The primary challenge facing the Batang Pier is to capitalize on this strong start and maintain their momentum as they pursue a coveted position in the playoffs.

“If we continue performing as we have been—exhibiting fast transitions, rebounding effectively, and adhering to our style of play—I believe this will propel us toward playoff qualification,” stated NorthPort star Joshua Munzon.
The Batang Pier demonstrated their capabilities in a formidable contest against perennial contender Magnolia, securing a narrow 107-103 victory last Wednesday. This triumph followed their opening wins over NLEX (114-87) and Terrafirma (113-101), resulting in a 3-0 record and a tie for the top position with reigning Philippine Cup champion Meralco.
“Commencing the season with a 3-0 record is significant for us. We hope to regroup and prepare for the upcoming game on Sunday,” Munzon added.
Following their match against the Hotshots, the team, led by coach Bonnie Tan, faces another demanding challenge on Sunday when they contend with Governors’ Cup titleholders TNT (0-1) at 5 p.m. at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
The Rondae Hollis-Jefferson-led Tropang Giga are eager to recover after suffering an 84-105 defeat to guest team Eastern in their conference debut on Friday night.
Assistant coach Renzy Bajar emphasized that if Munzon, Arvin Tolentino, import Kadeem Jack, and the rest of the Batang Pier adhere to the game plan, they will likely succeed.
“The primary focus is to maintain consistency and follow the game plan. In the Magnolia game, our victory was largely attributed to our defense and the advantage we secured through fast-break points,” remarked Bajar, noting that his team would be atop the standings should they triumph over the Tropang Giga. “We hope to sustain this performance as we approach the game against TNT,” he concluded.
