LEGAZPI CITY – The provincial government of Sorsogon began rolling out fuel assistance for the transport sector following the province’s declaration of a state of calamity due to rising oil prices.

Initial allocation is PHP5 million, sourced from the province’s quick response fund, according to Provincial Information Office chief Salvador Mendoza during an interview on Friday.

“It will lessen the expenses and help them in their needs,” Mendoza said.

Each tricycle may receive a full tank or up to seven liters of gasoline.

“Around 13,000 motorized tricycle operator’s permit (MTOP) holders in 14 towns and one city are targeted to benefit from the assistance,” he added.

Fuel distribution is scheduled per town to ensure orderly implementation.

“Beneficiaries will be issued coupons or slips, which they can use to avail of fuel from selected gasoline stations designated by the provincial government in each municipality,” he said.

Only properly registered tricycles will qualify for the aid to guarantee correct distribution.

Sorsogon province has been placed under a state of calamity due to the economic impact of the ongoing sharp increase in oil prices, an offshoot of the Middle East tension. (With a report from Ella Mariz Mina, OJT/ PNA)
