Senate President Francis Escudero refuted claims of a pending resolution in the Senate to dismiss the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, calling it “a mere scrap of paper.” In an ambush interview, he stated that the Senate has neither received nor acted on such a measure, despite social media rumors.
“Walang ganoon uri ng resolusyon na finile o pending sa Senado sa ngayon. Ano mang kumakalat na resolusyon na wala namang author, na pinakita lang din naman sa akin ng media, ay ika nga mere scrap of paper unless may mag-file niyan, unless may mag-author niyan, unless pagdebatihan ‘yan at unless pagbotohan ‘yan,” Escudero explained, emphasizing the lack of an official author or debate.
He confirmed with the Senate Secretariat that no resolution had been filed and stated that the Senate will continue with the impeachment process on June 11 as per its rules.
Senator Joel Villanueva also dismissed the circulating document, noting he had only seen it in a Senate group chat and had not read it. “Kahit na (Even) in person, I’ve never seen anything like that,” he remarked.
Senator Allan Peter Cayetano acknowledged awareness of the resolution but stressed the Senate’s obligation to fulfill its constitutional duties. “I expected something like that because the elephant in the room is very simple. You want to be able to do your Constitutional duty, but I’ll make it very clear ha. Walang choice ang Senado,” he stated.
Reports indicate that a draft resolution proposing to drop the impeachment case against Duterte is circulating among senators due to time constraints.
