CHONBURI—John Derick Farr did more than end the Philippines’ medal drought at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games. He reignited the country’s mountain biking legacy with a daring, all-out run that shook the Khao Kheow Open Zoo course and delivered Team Philippines’ first podium finish of the Games on Wednesday.
Against a roaring Thai crowd an hour outside Bangkok, Farr stopped the clock at 2:43.676 in the men’s downhill event—good for bronze and a powerful reminder of why he remains one of Southeast Asia’s most explosive riders. For a moment, the Las Piñas native even occupied the hot seat as event leader, before hometown ace Boonsae Methasit unleashed a blistering 2:37.856 run to secure gold. Indonesia’s Sanjaya Rendy Varera slipped into silver with 2:38.714.
Farr’s medal continues a storyline years in the making. After winning bronze in Hanoi and striking gold on home soil in Batangas back in 2019, the veteran rider has now stood on the SEA Games podium in three straight editions—proof of remarkable longevity in a discipline where one mistake can end everything.
His podium came just minutes before Justin Kobe Macario delivered the Philippines’ first gold of the Games in men’s individual poomsae, turning an otherwise quiet morning into a sudden surge of momentum for the delegation.
Farr’s teammate Simon Peter Servillon nearly joined him in the medal circle, finishing fourth at 2:45.866 in a strong SEA Games debut. On the women’s side, Lea Denise Belgira also placed fourth with a 3:22.478 finish in a stacked field topped by Thailand’s Vipayee Deekaballes, Indonesia’s Riska Amelia Agustina, and Thailand’s Kanokrat Ritthidet.
With Farr once again leading by example, Team Philippines now looks to convert its opening breakthrough into a sustained push as the Chonburi events continue to unfold.
