Scottie Scheffler out for Sentry after hand injury

Scottie Scheffler, recently named PGA Tour Player of the Year for the third straight year, will miss the season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions due to an injury.

The world no. 1 golfer sustained a puncture wound to his right hand while preparing Christmas dinner. Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, confirmed on Friday that surgery was required to remove glass fragments from his palm. Scheffler is expected to fully recover in 3 to 4 weeks and plans to return for the American Express in mid-January.

The Sentry will be held from January 2 to 5, 2025, at Kapalua Resort in Hawaii. Scheffler’s withdrawal leaves him out of the season’s first two events, including the Sony Open in Hawaii the following week.

Scheffler’s stellar 2024 season included nine global wins, seven of them on the PGA Tour. He captured his second Masters title, won The Players and an Olympic gold medal, and claimed his first FedExCup after winning the Tour Championship. Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods (2005-2007) to win Player of the Year three times in a row.

Following his 3-2-0 performance in the Presidents Cup, Scheffler ended the year with a six-shot victory at the Hero World Challenge, debuting a new “claw” putting grip. He also dominated the year, holding the No. 1 ranking for all 52 weeks, a feat not achieved since Woods in 2009.
