ISTANBUL – The Saudi-led coalition announced early Tuesday that its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by Yemen’s Houthi group toward Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
The coalition did not disclose the missiles’ intended targets or provide information on possible casualties or damage resulting from the attempted attacks.
The latest interception followed a separate announcement Monday that coalition forces had shot down three drones over the Riyadh region and southern Saudi Arabia.
Authorities did not identify the origin of the drones or specify their intended targets.
Meanwhile, the coalition reported conducting military strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, targeting ballistic missile launchers, underground storage tunnels, and a missile depot.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said the operations were intended to weaken the Houthis’ ballistic missile capabilities and disrupt their weapons supply networks.
The incidents came amid escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group since July, alongside renewed clashes between Houthi fighters and forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s government against the Houthis since March 2015.
The Houthi group has controlled Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and several other areas of the country since September 2014.
The latest military developments highlight the continuing instability in Yemen and the growing security concerns across the region.
