The defending champions may be down a game, but the message coming out of San Miguel Beer’s locker room was unmistakable: the fight is far from over.
After absorbing a 96–91 loss to TNT Tropang 5G in the opener of the Season 50 Philippine Cup Finals of the Philippine Basketball Association on Wednesday night, the Beermen leaned on resolve rather than regret, embodied by the steady presence of Mo Tautuaa.
The Filipino-Tongan big man emerged as San Miguel’s emotional and tactical anchor at the Ynares Sports Center, teaming up with June Mar Fajardo to form a frontline that kept the defending champions within striking distance despite a shaky opening half.
Tautuaa finished with 22 points, leading all Beermen scorers, but his impact went beyond the box score. With San Miguel staring at a 19-point hole before halftime, it was his surge in the third quarter — 13 points in the period — that ignited a comeback and swung momentum back toward the red-and-white side. San Miguel outscored TNT 28–17 in that frame, suddenly turning what looked like a runaway into a tense Finals battle.
“I know our team has grit. We’re not just going to lay down,” Tautuaa said, his tone calm but firm. “We’re not just going to go away. We’re always ready. We’ll go back to practice, figure out what we need to change, and come back.”
The numbers reinforced his statement. Tautuaa went 7-of-13 from the field, knocked down two three-pointers, and was perfect from the line with six free throws. He added four rebounds, two steals, and a block, all while committing zero turnovers in nearly 30 minutes of action — a level of efficiency that kept San Miguel alive until the final possessions.
For a veteran who has already collected three championships with the Beermen, the loss did little to shake belief. Instead, it sharpened focus on the details that slipped early.
“Just maintaining it and trying to play through the game,” he said. “That’s how basketball goes. I’m just happy that we responded instead of folding. We made a better game out of it in the second half.”
San Miguel’s late push underscored why the series is expected to be long and bruising. Even with TNT controlling much of the first half, the Beermen’s size, experience, and composure nearly flipped the script in the closing minutes. One or two cleaner sequences early on, Tautuaa noted, could have changed the outcome entirely.
“I mean, obviously we wanted to win,” he added. “It’s back to the drawing board tomorrow and we’ll see where it goes.”
Game 1 may belong to TNT, but San Miguel’s response — led by Tautuaa’s two-way performance and refusal to concede — suggested a Finals far from decided. For the Beermen, the loss did not feel like a warning siren, but a reminder of who they are when pushed.
