In the wake of a controversial call during Game 1 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals, the San Miguel Beermen have decided not to pursue any formal protest regarding Mo Tautuaa’s fourth-quarter dunk that was later ruled as basket interference.
The call, which erased a crucial two points for San Miguel during a tight stretch of the game, sparked heated discussions among fans and analysts. However, instead of challenging the decision officially, the team is choosing to shift its focus forward.
Team manager Gee Abanilla explained that the team saw little value in filing a formal protest, especially after the PBA officiating team addressed the issue in a post-game press conference.
“It’s an exercise in futility,” Abanilla said in a message to the Inquirer. “The argument we would’ve made was already pre-empted by their explanation during the press con.”
The call in question happened in the final minutes of the game, when Tautuaa soared for what appeared to be a clean two-handed slam. However, game officials later reversed the basket, citing interference, a decision that may have shifted momentum in what ended as a narrow victory for their opponents.

Despite the high stakes of a championship series, San Miguel’s move to take the high road is being seen by some as a show of maturity and focus. Rather than getting caught up in the controversy, the Beermen are directing their energy toward bouncing back in the next game.
“We have to stay locked in on what we can control,” a team insider said. “We’re still in this fight.”
With the series just beginning, San Miguel’s decision sets the tone not only for the games to come, but also for how the team intends to handle adversity — with composure and a mindset fixed on winning on the court, not at the commissioner’s desk.
