Russia said it successfully launched a mobile solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the northwestern Arkhangelsk region during a combat training exercise.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the nuclear-capable missile reached its designated target area at the Kura training ground in the Kamchatka region in the country’s Far East.
The exercise also involved redeploying a mobile missile launch unit to a remote location before personnel prepared and carried out the launch.
Moscow said the test was intended to verify the missile system’s tactical, technical and flight characteristics.
The Defense Ministry did not identify the specific missile used in the exercise.
Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces operate the country’s land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and form a major part of its nuclear deterrent.
The latest launch followed another test in May, when Russia fired a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile from Plesetsk toward the Kura training range.
That earlier exercise was part of broader nuclear drills that also involved Belarus.
