Senior Russian and Iranian diplomats met in Moscow this week for two days of consultations focused on strengthening bilateral ties and discussing key regional security issues.
The July 21 to 22 talks brought together Iranian Assistant Foreign Minister Mojtaba Moradi and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, along with officials from several regional departments of Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed by the two countries.
The discussions also covered developments in the South Caucasus, Central Asia and the conflict in Ukraine, although Russian authorities did not disclose specific details.
The consultations took place after renewed tensions in the Middle East following recent military exchanges involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Moscow has continued to maintain close diplomatic ties with Tehran while urging restraint and offering to help ease regional tensions.
The meeting also came as Russia increased its diplomatic engagements ahead of a scheduled meeting between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The planned Lavrov-Rubio talks are expected to tackle bilateral relations and broader international security concerns.
