Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia and ASEAN countries welcomed the agreement between Iran and the United States to end their war and begin work on a future peace settlement.
Putin made the statement Thursday during a news conference in Kazan after the Russia-ASEAN Summit.
He said Moscow hoped the agreement would help restore stability in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region.
Putin said a more stable region could ease pressure on global energy and food markets.
He said the signing of the document by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian gave reason to expect that it could serve as a serious basis for future agreements.
Putin said the Russia-ASEAN Summit produced deals aimed at expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, technology, and security.
He said leaders and senior officials from all 11 ASEAN member states attended the summit, where participants approved the Kazan Declaration and a new Russia-ASEAN Action Plan covering political, economic, and humanitarian cooperation.
Putin also noted growing tourism between Russia and Southeast Asia and said Moscow would continue supporting peace and stability in the region. The summit marked 35 years of Russia-ASEAN ties, while Putin later held separate talks with the prime ministers of Cambodia, Singapore, Timor-Leste, and Thailand.
