Road to Brazil: Filipinas set for global World Cup Tour in bid for historic breakthrough

The Philippine women’s national football team is embarking on an ambitious two-year global campaign as it gears up for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with head coach Mark Torcaso unveiling an international preparation program designed to help the Filipinas reach new heights on football’s biggest stage.

Determined to build on the country’s landmark World Cup debut in 2023, Torcaso said the team will train and compete across Asia, Oceania, Europe, and South America, exposing the squad to different playing styles and high-level competition before heading to Brazil.

“Our objective is not just to qualify and participate again,” Torcaso said. “We want to compete our way and prove we belong among the world’s best.”

The Australian tactician emphasized that every training camp and international assignment has been carefully planned to ensure the Filipinas arrive at the World Cup fully prepared to challenge elite opposition and push beyond the group stage for the first time.

The buildup follows an eventful campaign for the national team, highlighted by its historic Southeast Asian Games gold medal and participation in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, tournaments that Torcaso believes offered valuable lessons against some of Asia’s strongest teams.

The Filipinas recently gathered in San Diego, California, where a 30-player squad trained and played exhibition matches against professional and club teams, including San Diego Wave and Albion San Diego. The camp also gave the coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate emerging talents alongside established national team players.

Talent identification remains a major priority as preparations intensify. Torcaso is currently in the Philippines monitoring players in the opening of the Philippine Football Federation Women’s League while continuing to scout Filipina footballers competing overseas, including those based in Myanmar, Taiwan, and several European leagues.

According to the coach, no potential national team player will be overlooked.

He stressed that every qualified Filipina, whether playing domestically or abroad, deserves the opportunity to earn a place in the World Cup squad.

The team’s demanding calendar continues later this year with participation in the Asian Games in Japan, where Torcaso intends to evaluate younger and fringe players, particularly with several overseas-based stars expected to be unavailable outside the FIFA international window.

Beyond the continental competition, the Filipinas are scheduled for an extensive series of international assignments, including a South American tour in October, friendlies against teams from Asia and Oceania, participation in Spain’s prestigious Pinatar Cup in early 2027, and the Olympic qualifying tournament in April.

Preparations will culminate with an intensive four-to-six-week training camp in Brazil, allowing the squad to acclimatize to local conditions before the World Cup kicks off.

The comprehensive roadmap has received the full backing of the Philippine Football Federation, with federation president John Anthony Gutierrez pledging continued support for the coaching staff.

Gutierrez said the federation believes Torcaso’s detailed long-term program gives the Filipinas the best opportunity to compete with the world’s top teams and continue raising the standard of Philippine women’s football on the global stage.

With a rigorous international schedule, expanded talent search, and full federation support, the Filipinas are aiming not only to return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup—but to make an even bigger statement when they take the field in Brazil in 2027.
