Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Monday issued a stern warning to individuals spreading fake news from abroad, urging them to stop before legal action is taken against them.

Speaking to reporters, Remulla emphasized that once fake news crosses into the territory of cybercrime, it becomes legally actionable.

“Once it falls under cybercrime, that’s a different ballgame,” he said. “Borders are becoming less relevant. There will come a time when even those spreading disinformation from overseas can be held accountable.”

Remulla stressed the damaging impact of disinformation on society.

“Fake news is fake news—it’s harmful and irresponsible to spread lies,” he said. “With digital media being such a powerful tool, it has the potential to destabilize society. Our priority is to protect the well-being of the majority, not cater to the minority who aim to sow chaos.”

He also highlighted the duty of every citizen to uphold the truth. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to speak honestly,” he added.

Meanwhile, Congress is holding legislative hearings to address the growing issue of fake news. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is also working to trace those allegedly funding disinformation campaigns on social media.
