Regine Velasquez
Asia’s Songbird, Regine Velasquez, is preparing for the possibility of retirement from singing in the future. While she reassures fans that this won’t happen anytime soon, she admits she has already started easing into the idea.
In an interview with MJ Felipe for ABS-CBN News’ On Cue on YouTube (March 7, 2025), Regine spoke candidly about her career and personal life in celebration of Women’s Month.
“I’m excited, not afraid”
A multi-awarded singer, powerhouse concert performer, devoted wife, and mother, Regine Velasquez has dedicated decades to music. However, she acknowledges that stepping away from the stage is inevitable.
“I’m excited,” she admitted. “I’m not scared. I’m simply preparing myself for that moment. Not that it’s happening soon, but I know that time will come.”
Regine explained that her career has been fulfilling and addictive, especially the instant gratification of performing live. However, she believes certain frustrations during concerts might be subtle signs from above, gently telling her to slow down.
“I’m learning to embrace little disappointments during performances. Maybe it’s God’s way of helping me transition gradually. So when the time comes to say, ‘Yeah, I think it’s time to stop,’ it won’t be as difficult.”
She also acknowledged the emotions of leaving the industry, saying, “I know I’ll miss it, but I don’t think it will be abrupt.”
A shared plan with husband Ogie Alcasid
Regine, 54, and her husband, singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid, 57, have already started discussing their retirement plans.
“We’re taking our time. I mean, I don’t look 100 yet!” she joked. “But my husband and I have been preparing for it. Especially him, since he’s a bit older than me.”
Their main goal? To travel while they’re still in good health.
“We want to enjoy life while we still can. That’s why we’re being smart with our earnings and working hard now—to prepare for the inevitable,” she shared.
Menopause & the impact on her voice
Despite her legendary vocal prowess, Regine Velasquez candidly revealed how menopause has affected her singing.
She delivered four sold-out performances during her recent Reset concert series at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater. However, she admitted that some nights were particularly challenging.
“I’m happy with how it turned out, but I wish I could’ve done more,” she reflected. “Some nights, my voice just wouldn’t cooperate. That’s the reality I’m facing now.”
She attributed the changes to menopause, explaining that it has significantly impacted her vocal abilities.
“There’s nothing I can do about it, but I’m grateful. The love and support from my audience were overwhelming. They kept giving me standing ovations, and in my head, I was asking, ‘Do I even deserve this?’ But they truly love me, and I feel beyond blessed.”
As Regine gracefully embraces this new chapter in her life, one thing remains certain—her legacy in the music industry is timeless.
