Quezon City strengthens fire safety measures ahead of New Year

Colorful fireworks bursting in the night sky, creating bright sparks and glowing trails against a dark background.

Quezon City authorities have stepped up fire safety efforts as the number of fire incidents rises during the “ber” months.

The Quezon City Fire Department (QCFD) reported 39 fire incidents from September to December, compared with 27 during the same period last year.

Fire Senior Inspector Robert Maravilla said the increase prompted the department to intensify public awareness campaigns across the city.

Through the Ugnayan sa Barangay program, QCFD sub-stations conduct safety talks, distribute flyers, and hold community discussions.

Residents are also being encouraged to use alternatives to firecrackers, such as torotot, to reduce the risk of accidents.

Fire stations have been instructed to display safety reminders on banners and tarpaulins, while fire trucks broadcast pre-recorded announcements in key neighborhoods.

Deployment areas have been selected to allow for a faster response to incidents during New Year festivities.

Maravilla advised homeowners leaving their residences for the holidays to unplug electrical appliances as a precaution.

The local government will assign 200 personnel from the Department of Public Safety and Order to monitor New Year countdown events at the Quezon City Memorial Circle and Eastwood.

Officials have cleared 52 fireworks displays and 20 authorized sellers to help ensure a safer celebration across the city.
