The Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 98 has rejected Vice President Sara Duterte’s request for the presiding judge to step aside from her grave threats case.
The Department of Justice confirmed the denial Tuesday but withheld further details about the ruling because the case remains pending before the court.
DOJ spokesperson Atty. Polo Martinez said the department would avoid discussing matters that could affect the proceedings in line with the sub judice rule.
Duterte’s camp separately confirmed receiving the order and said it was reviewing the legal options available following the court’s decision.
Her lawyer, Atty. Paul Lawrence Lim, said the Vice President intends to avail herself of all remedies allowed under the law.
The defense also received a directive reminding both parties to observe restrictions on public discussion of the merits of the case while it is being heard.
The sub judice rule generally limits statements or commentary that could prejudice an unresolved court proceeding or influence its outcome.
The case will remain with RTC Branch 98 unless a higher court grants relief sought by Duterte’s camp or the trial court issues another order affecting the proceedings.
