Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a phone call on Tuesday to discuss a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, with U.S. officials hopeful for an agreement in the coming weeks.
Trump has expressed confidence in resolving the three-year conflict, saying significant progress has been made between the U.S. and Russia. Putin has also signaled support for a ceasefire but insists on addressing concerns about its implementation.
Kyiv has agreed to the ceasefire, but European allies accuse Putin of delaying an immediate halt to fighting. The U.K. has criticized him for “dragging his feet,” while Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky warns Russia is using the time to strengthen its battlefield position.
Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, presented a 30-day ceasefire proposal to Putin last week, which is now under discussion. Meanwhile, fighting continues, with Russia advancing in some areas and both sides intensifying drone attacks.
