Pokemon Legends: Z-A launches with real-time battles

Pokemon trainers can expect a fresh twist on virtual battles as “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” debuts on Nintendo consoles this Thursday, marking a significant evolution in the nearly 30-year-old franchise.

Set in a vast, Paris-inspired city featuring landmarks reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, the game introduces real-time combat for the first time, replacing traditional turn-based play. Players must time their attacks and dodges during arena battles, offering a welcome change that addresses fans’ calls for innovation in recent Pokemon releases. Developed by Japanese studio Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, this title is part of the “Legends” spin-off series that began with “Arceus” in 2022, and it’s available on both the original Switch and its Switch 2 successor.

The gameplay follows a classic competition format, where players build and train their creatures to climb the ranks. Inspired by Japan’s tradition of insect gathering, the Pokemon series has sold nearly 490 million copies across consoles and mobile devices. The franchise, centered on capturing and battling adorable yet powerful monsters, has expanded into films, animated series, and merchandise, generating $12 billion in licensing revenue in 2024 alone.
