Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. on Saturday ordered police personnel to remain strictly nonpartisan as political tensions intensify across the country.

Nartatez said both uniformed and civilian personnel were reminded to avoid engaging in political disputes, stressing that their mandate is limited to law enforcement and public safety.

He emphasized that involvement in partisan issues was not part of police duty, urging personnel to focus on maintaining peace and order.

The PNP chief also cautioned officers active on social media, saying they must exercise restraint and professionalism in line with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

He warned that online activity involving political commentary could affect the credibility and neutrality of the police organization.

Nartatez said police officers, while free as private citizens, must avoid public political engagement that could be linked to their role in the institution.

He also urged the public to be responsible in consuming and sharing information online amid concerns over misinformation and unverified content.

The PNP assured it remains focused on security operations and is prepared to handle rallies and mass actions while maintaining public order.
