The Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered a comprehensive review of security measures at all airports following a shooting incident involving a knife-wielding passenger at Iloilo International Airport.
In a statement on Friday, the PNP said it coordinated with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and airport security units to immediately examine existing safety procedures.
The audit focused on passenger screening, access controls, and emergency response protocols to determine how a bladed weapon entered a restricted area.
“We are already coordinating closely with CAAP and other airport security units. Tinitingnan natin kung saan nagkaroon ng lapses at paano pa natin mapapalakas ang screening procedures,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.
Police said the suspect, a Camiguin resident bound for Davao, was shot on Wednesday after attempting to stab a responding officer at the airport’s departure area.
The suspect sustained a chest wound and was rushed to a hospital for treatment, authorities said.
Investigators noted that the initial security screening at the departure entrance had been removed in the last quarter of 2025 to ease passenger flow, a move now under review.
