Telecommunications giant PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications have mobilized emergency response teams across Mindanao following the powerful earthquake that struck parts of the region, as efforts intensify to restore connectivity and support disaster response operations.
Field engineers and network specialists were immediately deployed to assess telecommunications infrastructure in affected areas, particularly in General Santos City and several municipalities across South Cotabato, which were among the hardest hit by the tremor.
Initial assessments showed that most PLDT and Smart network facilities remain stable and operational despite the strong quake. However, some service disruptions have been reported, largely due to widespread commercial power outages affecting selected cell sites and network facilities.
To help maintain critical communications during the emergency, PLDT announced the deployment of Starlink satellite broadband units to key locations and communities identified by local government units as requiring backup connectivity. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted communication for emergency responders, government agencies, and affected residents while restoration work continues.

PLDT and Smart said they are working closely with local authorities, power providers, and disaster response agencies to accelerate restoration efforts and ensure that affected communities regain access to essential telecommunications services as quickly as possible.
