Pingkian: Isang Musikal returns, Rekindles the Fight for Freedom

Tanghalang Pilipino’s Pingkian: Isang Musikal is back on stage this September, delivering an even fiercer and more urgent performance than its 2024 debut. The revival transcends being just a historical musical—it is a reminder of what it means to fight for freedom in today’s times.

Written by Palanca Award-winner Juan Ekis, with music by Ejay Yatco and direction by Jenny Jamora, the musical tells the story of Emilio Jacinto, the “Brains of the Katipunan.” The title “Pingkian,” Jacinto’s nom de guerre, means “flint” or “spark-maker,” symbolizing his role in igniting revolutionary ideas through his writings.

The story unfolds through Jacinto’s hallucinations after being wounded and captured by Spanish forces. In this dreamlike state, he encounters Andres Bonifacio, Jose Rizal, and his mother Josefa Dizon—figures who force him to confront his doubts, his ideals, and the legacy he hoped to leave.

Vic Robinson delivers a riveting portrayal of Jacinto, balancing the hero’s intellectual brilliance with vulnerability. Gab Pangilinan impresses in dual roles as traitor Florencio Reyes and Jacinto’s lover, Catalina de Jesus. Paw Castillo embodies Bonifacio’s fiery spirit, while Kakki Teodoro’s Rizal brings quiet strength and philosophical clarity.

One of the most powerful moments comes in “Sapat Ba ang mga Salita? (Are Words Enough?),” where Jacinto questions whether writings can spark real change. Rizal counters with a reminder that “revolution is not only about bloodshed — ideas are weapons too.”

A new highlight in this year’s run is a rap-style balagtasan between Rizal and Jacinto, merging tradition with contemporary rhythm, showing how timeless ideals can still resonate with today’s audiences.

The emotional peak arrives with the song Pangarap Ko’y Kalayaan (My Dream is Freedom):

“Pangarap ko’y kalayaan, malayang Katagalugan.
Bayang walang inaapi, bayang akin ang sarili.”

The moving refrain reinforces the message that freedom remains a dream worth fighting for.

Pingkian resonates strongly in today’s political climate marked by corruption and public frustration. More than a stage production, it holds up a mirror to society and reminds audiences that the revolution’s work is unfinished.

As an original Filipino work, Pingkian is both artistic and timely—a triumph that blends history, music, and urgent social reflection. It deserves to be seen not only by theatergoers, but also by students, educators, and leaders who still believe in the nation’s promise.

Pingkian: Isang Musikal runs until October 12, 2025, at Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez, CCP Complex, Pasay City. Tickets are available via TicketWorld and Ticket2Me.
