MANILA – Taal Volcano recorded a minor phreatomagmatic eruption on Thursday evening, October 8, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to issue an advisory on possible ashfall in nearby communities in Batangas.

According to Phivolcs, the eruption occurred at 6:06 p.m. at the volcano’s main crater and lasted at least five minutes, based on seismic and camera monitoring data from the Taal Volcano Network.

The volcanic activity produced a dark gray plume that reached approximately 4,000 meters above the crater, as observed by monitoring cameras at the Main Crater West Rim, Daang Kastila and Buco stations.

Phivolcs warned that thin ashfall could affect communities along the southwestern shores of Taal Lake, particularly Agoncillo, Lemery, San Nicolas and Taal, as well as surrounding areas in Batangas.

Despite the eruption, Alert Level 1 remained in effect over Taal Volcano, indicating low-level volcanic unrest.

Residents were advised to stay alert for further volcanic activity, take precautions against ash exposure and follow updates from Phivolcs and local disaster management authorities.
