The construction sector kicked off 2025 on a strong note, with 12,526 new construction activities recorded in January, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Based on preliminary data, these projects covered 3.71 million square meters of floor space and totaled P48.57 billion.
Notably, the PSA clarified that the figures exclude repairs, demolitions, street furniture, and other minor works like helipads and water tanks since these types don’t typically report floor area.
Residential buildings dominated the scene, accounting for 7,671 projects or 61.2% of all construction activities. These residential projects were valued at a combined P20.94 billion, with single-type houses making up the bulk at 6,863 constructions.
Meanwhile, non-residential buildings—which include commercial, industrial, and institutional projects—totaled 3,138 and had a higher total value of P24.16 billion, signaling larger or more complex builds. Most of these were commercial properties.
The PSA also noted contributions from additions to existing buildings (3.7%), structural alterations (7.8%), and repairs (2.2%).
For those wondering about costs, the average construction cost in January 2025 was P12,208.10 per square meter.
With residential builds driving much of the momentum and commercial developments not far behind, the numbers point to a vibrant start to the year for the country’s construction industry.
