The Philippine Navy (PN) has placed the transport ship BRP Bacolod City (LS-550) on standby for potential humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations as Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong) approaches Luzon.
“As part of the Navy’s broader humanitarian efforts, the vessel has been placed on standby for potential HADR operations in view of the approaching Super Typhoon Uwan,” PN Public Affairs Office chief Commander Maria Angelica Sisican said.
Once weather conditions improve, the ship will immediately carry out relief transport missions to deliver aid to affected communities, she added.
On Saturday, personnel from the Marine Battalion Landing Team-3 (MBLT-3) loaded relief goods onto BRP Bacolod City in Cavite City. The supplies were intended for Cebu communities still recovering from Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi).
“The PN remains steadfast and ever ready to serve the Filipino people, extending swift assistance and unwavering support in times of calamity and need,” Sisican said.
Uwan intensified into a super typhoon on Sunday morning, bringing the threat of catastrophic winds and flooding. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. earlier stated that all government agencies are on full alert, with preemptive evacuations underway and toll fees suspended for emergency convoys.
