Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez will represent President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump on January 20, Malacañang announced Wednesday.
In a statement, Presidential Communications Office Secretary Cesar Chavez confirmed that the U.S. government had invited chiefs of diplomatic missions from various countries to attend the inaugural ceremonies on behalf of their respective heads of state.
“The Palace confirms that the Secretary of State, on behalf of the Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, has invited Chiefs of Diplomatic Missions and their spouses to represent their respective governments at the principal inaugural events,” Chavez said.
“Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez will represent President Marcos at the inauguration,” he added.
Trump’s return to the White House
Donald Trump, who served as U.S. president from 2017 to 2021, secured a second term after defeating outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections. His return marks a significant shift in U.S. leadership and policy direction.
In a congratulatory phone call in November, President Marcos lauded Trump on his election victory. The two leaders also discussed the enduring partnership between the Philippines and the United States, emphasizing the mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
When asked about a potential meeting between President Marcos and President Trump in early 2025, Chavez said no plans had been finalized. However, diplomatic sources have hinted at the possibility of such a visit to reinforce the Philippines-U.S. alliance.
The United States remains the Philippines’ oldest and most steadfast military ally, with ties deeply rooted in shared history, values, and mutual strategic interests.
