The Philippine Embassy in Yangon issued an urgent warning to Filipinos on Thursday, urging them to exercise extreme caution against suspicious job offers in Myanmar amid rising cases of human trafficking.
“These schemes have already led many unsuspecting individuals into trafficking-in-persons networks, resulting in severe exploitation, abuse, and life-threatening situations,” the embassy said.
Filipinos are advised to accept only verified employment offers cleared by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), as failure to secure proper documentation increases the risk of falling victim to traffickers. The embassy also warned against fraudulent job titles, such as fake “Customer Service Representative” roles, often used to lure victims into scam hubs in Southeast Asia.
The embassy encouraged nationals to report or consult authorities before accepting overseas employment. Concerned individuals may contact the Assistance-to-Nationals Section at yangonpe.atn@dfa.gov.ph or (+95) 998-521-0991.
An independent UN report in May highlighted large-scale trafficking in the region, with victims forced into online fraud and subjected to severe abuse, including beatings, electrocution, solitary confinement, and sexual violence.
