The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) is ushering in what organizers are calling “A New Era for Philippine Cinema,” as the 55th edition of the iconic festival revealed its first wave of official entries in a grand launch event that drew stars and fans alike.
Setting the tone for a dynamic and diverse lineup, MMFF 2025 unveiled four films headlined by some of the country’s most prominent names, promising a strong mix of drama, comedy, action, and horror.
Leading the pack is Call Me Mother, a genre-bending film featuring the powerhouse duo of Nadine Lustre and Vice Ganda. Directed by multi-awarded filmmaker Jun Robles Lana, the project has already generated buzz for its bold storytelling and magnetic cast chemistry.
Also making the shortlist is the multi-generational family drama Reconnect, which brings together Gerald Anderson, Carmina Villarroel, Zoren Legaspi, Gloria Diaz, and Alexa Miro under the direction of Jade Castro. The film explores the fractured bonds within a Filipino family navigating loss and redemption in the digital age.
For action aficionados, Manila’s Finest promises gritty thrills, with Piolo Pascual portraying a seasoned cop caught in a web of corruption and personal demons. Directed by Rae Red, the film aims to deliver both cinematic spectacle and sharp social commentary.
Meanwhile, horror fans will be treated to Shake, Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins, a chilling return to the beloved horror franchise. With Ivana Alawi leading an ensemble cast that includes Francine Diaz, Carla Abellana, Richard Gutierrez, and Janice De Belen, this installment delves into the beginnings of the terrifying lore that defined generations of Filipino horror.
The launch event was made even more festive with the presence of Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition personalities Brent Manalo, River Joseph, Esnyr Ranollo, and Ralph De Leon, reflecting the festival’s commitment to embracing younger audiences.
While the first four entries have set the bar high, anticipation continues to build as organizers prepare to announce the remaining four official films on September 30.
