The Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed that all 426 reported rabies cases in 2024 resulted in fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures. Of these cases, 45% (193) were caused by bites from domestic pets, with more than half involving animals of unknown vaccination status.
Dr. Edwin M. Mercado, president and CEO of PhilHealth, emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention after an animal bite or scratch.
“We encourage everyone not to hesitate to consult a doctor if they are bitten or scratched by any animal, whether a pet or a stray. Rabies is a deadly disease, but it is entirely preventable if vaccination is administered promptly,” Mercado stated.
A persistent global and national concern
Rabies remains a major global health concern, causing an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 deaths each year. The Philippines ranks sixth among the countries with the highest rabies incidence. From January 1 to March 1 of this year alone, the country has already recorded 55 rabies cases.
In line with National Rabies Awareness Month, PhilHealth reminds its members that they can avail themselves of the Animal Bite Treatment (ABT) Package to cover essential rabies-related medical care. The package has been increased from ₱3,000 to ₱5,850, ensuring broader coverage for critical post-exposure prophylaxis, which includes:
✔ Rabies vaccine and rabies immune globulin for immediate protection
✔ Local wound care
✔ Tetanus toxoid and anti-tetanus serum
✔ Antibiotics
✔ Medical supplies such as syringes, alcohol, and antiseptics
Strengthening rabies prevention and responsible pet ownership
PhilHealth continues collaborating with the National Rabies Prevention and Control Committee to push for a rabies-free Philippines.
“At PhilHealth, we fully support efforts to eliminate rabies by promoting responsible pet ownership. While we have expanded our ABT Package to over 700 accredited providers nationwide, prevention starts with vaccinating our pets. Let us all do our part in protecting our families,” Mercado urged.
