The Philippine Coast Guard in Eastern Visayas temporarily suspended all sea travel in the region on Wednesday due to Tropical Storm Basyang, which is expected to bring strong winds and rough seas.

The suspension affects ports and water routes in Leyte, Samar, Biliran, and parts of southern Cebu, as well as routes connecting to neighboring islands. Vessels are only allowed to sail to take shelter, with strict prohibitions on carrying passengers or cargo.

The measure followed PAGASA’s warning that Basyang continues to intensify while moving west-southwest over the Philippine Sea with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 80 kph. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been hoisted over several provinces in Visayas and Mindanao.

Coast Guard officials reminded fishermen and small boat operators to stay ashore and monitor weather updates. They also urged the public to comply with safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary sea travel.

In Aklan, Antique, and other nearby areas, local Coast Guard stations also temporarily suspended trips, allowing only limited operations under strict safety measures, such as reduced passenger capacity and sunset arrival requirements.

Authorities said sea travel will resume only after the storm passes and conditions stabilize, emphasizing the importance of following all official advisories.

The PCG stressed that compliance with maritime safety rules and the use of proper documentation for vessels is crucial during adverse weather conditions to prevent accidents and protect lives at sea.
