PBA lays down 3-year ban for players jumping to foreign leagues

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has drawn a firm line in the sand when it comes to player loyalty, unveiling a controversial new rule that restricts the return of players who opt to leave the league for greener pastures overseas.

In a resolution swiftly passed by the PBA Board of Governors on July 17 and enforced the very next day, any player who turns down a contract renewal from his current team and signs with a foreign league will be barred from rejoining the PBA for three years.

The rule has already claimed its first notable names: Jamie Malonzo, who declined an extension with Barangay Ginebra and signed with Japan B.League’s Kyoto Hannaryz, and William Navarro, who left Magnolia to join the Korean Basketball League’s Busan KCC Egis.

This policy also targets draftees who skip out on signing rookie contracts in favor of playing abroad. Among those potentially impacted is Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) MVP frontrunner Dave Ildefonso, who has yet to suit up for NorthPort despite being drafted.

Arvin Tolentino could also find himself on the wrong side of the ruling. The former NorthPort standout inked a deal with KBL powerhouse Seoul SK Knights in May.

There are, however, a few loopholes. The three-year ban won’t apply to players who are officially deemed unrestricted free agents — those who either weren’t offered a new deal 30 days after their contract ended, or have completed at least 21 PBA conferences or seven years in the league at the time of contract expiration.

With this move, the PBA is clearly signaling that while players may seek opportunities abroad, returning won’t come without consequences.
