The PBA wasted little time in handing down penalties after the ugly altercation that overshadowed TNT’s Commissioner’s Cup clash with Rain or Shine, sending a clear message that violence has no place in the league.

In the aftermath of the fourth-quarter fistfight that disrupted Friday night’s game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the Commissioner’s Office suspended and fined both Glenn Khobuntin and Jaylen Johnson for their roles in the incident. Khobuntin received the heavier punishment with a two-game suspension and a P70,000 fine, while Johnson was meted a one-game ban and a P50,000 penalty.

Both players were ordered to appear before PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial on Saturday to give their accounts of the incident, which broke out in the closing stretch of an already intense and emotionally charged contest. What began as a physical battle on the floor escalated into a full-blown confrontation, drawing immediate concern from officials and fans alike.

League officials later slapped both Khobuntin and Johnson with flagrant foul penalty 2 infractions, resulting in their automatic ejections. But even after both players were sent off, the fallout lingered, with the incident becoming the dominant storyline of a game Rain or Shine eventually won, 112-109.

For TNT, the sanctions come at a costly time. Khobuntin will begin serving his two-game suspension on Sunday when the Tropang 5G face NLEX, and he will remain unavailable for their March 28 showdown against San Miguel. His absence removes a key veteran presence from TNT’s rotation as the team tries to regain its footing early in the conference.

Rain or Shine, meanwhile, will also have to move forward without one of its major reinforcements in its next outing. Johnson, who issued an apology after the game, will sit out the Elasto Painters’ March 27 meeting with Meralco.

Beyond the fines and suspensions, the episode serves as another reminder of how quickly tensions can spill over in high-stakes games. While physicality has long been part of the PBA’s identity, the league’s latest ruling shows it is determined to draw a firm line when emotions cross into outright violence.
