MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – The municipal government here is giving away five kilos of rice to a total of 46,000 households to ease the impact of fuel price hike.

“Very timely na ngayon i-release. Nasa 31 barangays na ang natapos (The release of the rice is very timely. We have already distributed to the 31 barangays),” Mayor Alfe Soriano said in an interview Friday.

The town has 73 barangays.

Recipients are counted per house, not by family, as some have more than one family living together.

“If there are more than one family in a house, they just share in the five kilos rice,” he said. “Whether you are rich or poor, you will get rice subsidy but it is per household.”

Melanie Episcope, a resident of Malasiqui, said her family’s income is affected because her husband is a jeepney driver.

“Nagpapasalamat po kami sa ayuda na ito. Malaking bagay na po ito para sa amin. Ilang hain na rin po kainan ito (We are grateful for this subsidy. This is a big help for us. This would provide a couple of meals already),” Episcope said. (PNA)
