Palo Alto Networks has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Protect AI, a pioneering company specializing in the security of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications. The move underscores Palo Alto Networks’ commitment to advancing next-generation cybersecurity and addressing emerging threats driven by the rapid adoption of AI technologies.

As large enterprises and government agencies integrate AI more deeply into their operations, they face new and complex security challenges. The AI ecosystem—comprising models, agents, infrastructure, APIs, tools, and third-party components—introduces a growing and often underestimated attack surface. Malicious actors are exploiting vulnerabilities through tactics such as model manipulation, data poisoning, and prompt injection attacks. This evolving threat landscape requires specialized security solutions designed specifically for AI environments.

Palo Alto Networks has been a forerunner in developing AI security capabilities, and the acquisition of Protect AI enhances its ability to secure this new digital frontier. Protect AI’s team and technology will help accelerate Palo Alto Networks’ development of Prisma AIRS™, a newly announced AI security platform that aims to deliver the most comprehensive protection across the entire AI development lifecycle.

“With AI becoming central to business operations, traditional security approaches fall short,” said Anand Oswal, SVP and GM at Palo Alto Networks. “By integrating Protect AI’s cutting-edge solutions, we’re empowering organizations to innovate with AI while maintaining robust security. This acquisition strengthens our ability to deliver best-in-class protection for today’s—and tomorrow’s—AI risks.”

Ian Swanson, Co-Founder and CEO of Protect AI, added, “Joining Palo Alto Networks allows us to scale our mission of securing the AI ecosystem for organizations of every size. We’re thrilled to align with a partner that shares our vision and brings the reach and resources to maximize our global impact.”

Following the close of the deal—expected in Palo Alto Networks’ fiscal first quarter of 2026 and subject to regulatory approval—Protect AI’s leadership and employees will become part of the Palo Alto Networks team.
