Pakistan summoned the US charge d’affaires in Islamabad on Wednesday after Washington’s ambassador to India described Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India.US Ambassador Sergio Gor made the remark during his first visit to the disputed region after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry rejected the characterization and formally conveyed its objection to the US diplomatic mission.
Islamabad maintained that Jammu and Kashmir remains a disputed territory whose final status should be resolved in line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
Pakistan also argued that Gor’s statement was inconsistent with what it described as Washington’s longstanding position on the Kashmir dispute.
The Foreign Ministry further cited US President Donald Trump’s previous offer to mediate between India and Pakistan over Kashmir following last year’s conflict.
Gor also indicated that Washington could reconsider its travel advisory for the region, which remains politically sensitive and heavily militarized.
India has not yet publicly responded to Pakistan’s protest over the ambassador’s remarks.
