PAGASA tracks potential cyclone east of Mindanao

The state weather bureau announced Tuesday that a low pressure area (LPA) located east of Mindanao is highly likely to develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.

As of 2:00 a.m., the LPA was spotted 1,370 kilometers east of Northeastern Mindanao. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Chenel Dominguez stated the system is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) within the day.

Once it intensifies into a tropical cyclone, the weather disturbance will be named “Basyang.” Initial forecasts suggest the potential cyclone may affect the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

While monitoring the LPA, PAGASA noted that several other weather systems continue to bring rain across the archipelago.

The shear line is currently causing scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms in the Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, and Misamis Oriental. Residents in these areas have been warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy rainfall.

In Luzon, the northeast monsoon (amihan) is bringing light rains to the Batanes and Babuyan Islands, with isolated light rains expected over the rest of the island group. The remainder of Mindanao will experience localized thunderstorms.

Maritime conditions remain hazardous in certain areas, with moderate to strong winds and rough seas forecast for Northern Luzon and the eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Light to moderate winds and slight seas are expected elsewhere in the country.
