Pagasa sees hotter weather as amihan weakens nationwide

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Friday said warmer conditions are expected across most parts of the country as prevailing wind patterns begin to shift.

The state weather bureau reported that the northeast monsoon continued to affect Extreme Northern Luzon, while easterlies were already influencing the rest of Luzon and the Visayas.

Weather specialist Leanne Loreto said temperatures were beginning to rise, although the hot season has not yet fully set in as the amihan still lingers in some areas, particularly in the northernmost parts of Luzon.

She explained that as the northeast monsoon weakens and is gradually replaced by easterlies coming from the Pacific Ocean, hotter and more humid conditions are likely to be felt nationwide.

Pagasa data showed that temperatures may reach up to 33°C in Tuguegarao and around 34°C in parts of Mindanao, including areas in Zamboanga and Davao.

However, Loreto noted that the heat index or the “damang init” would be higher due to humidity, with several areas expected to fall under the extreme caution range.

In Metro Manila, the heat index was projected to range between 33°C and 34°C, while in Cotabato City, it could climb to as high as 40°C, posing risks such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, especially during midday to afternoon exposure.

Meanwhile, parts of Northern Luzon, including Batanes, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, and Cagayan, were expected to experience isolated light rains due to the amihan, while the rest of the country may see localized thunderstorms. Pagasa added that sea conditions remain generally safe, with no gale warning issued and no tropical cyclone expected within or near the Philippine Area of Responsibility in the coming days.
