The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday maintained a heightened alert status as the nationwide transport strike continued into its second day.

Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez said authorities were prepared to address any situation that may arise while ensuring public safety.

He noted that the protest action, which began on March 19, had so far remained peaceful and orderly across the country.

The strike was initiated by the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) to protest rising fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Nartatez said law enforcement units stayed ready to respond to developments while continuing to secure communities and maintain order.

He reported that various protest activities were held nationwide without any major untoward incidents.

The police organization reiterated its commitment to uphold the right to peaceful assembly while enforcing laws and protecting the public.

Officers were deployed in key areas to manage traffic and assist affected commuters, with close coordination maintained with other government agencies and local officials to reduce disruptions.
