MANILA, Philippines — Senator Robin Padilla’s defense of China has drawn attention to the continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where Chinese vessels have repeatedly been accused of aggressive actions against Philippine personnel.

In remarks made on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Padilla insisted that the Chinese ambassador had never threatened the Philippines and urged government officials to engage in diplomatic dialogue rather than confrontation.

“Never silang nagbanta. Wala, walang gano’n,” Padilla said.

He also advised Philippine officials to remain calm when dealing with the Chinese envoy.

“Dapat lahat ng gustong kumausap sa kaniya, lalo na ‘yung mga opisyal nating mainit ang ulo, makipag-usap kayo. Ambassador ‘yun. Diplomatic ‘yung tao na ‘yon,” he added.

However, Padilla’s defense of the Chinese ambassador does not address the broader concerns surrounding Beijing’s actions in Philippine waters.

The Philippine Coast Guard and Armed Forces of the Philippines have repeatedly reported incidents involving Chinese vessels, including dangerous maneuvers, water cannon attacks, and interference with Philippine maritime operations.

These incidents have raised questions about whether diplomatic assurances are consistent with China’s actions at sea.

While dialogue remains an important tool in managing relations between Manila and Beijing, the Philippines has consistently maintained that its sovereign rights and maritime entitlements must be respected.

The 2016 arbitral ruling under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea rejected the legal basis of China’s expansive historic-rights claims within the areas covered by the ruling. Beijing has refused to recognize the decision.

Against this backdrop, Padilla’s remarks highlight a central issue in Philippine-China relations: whether diplomatic engagement alone can address continuing maritime confrontations without stronger demands for accountability.

Although the senator emphasized the importance of respectful communication, the reported incidents involving Chinese vessels remain a significant concern for Philippine maritime security and the protection of Filipino personnel operating in the West Philippine Sea.
