More than 2,000 residents from various barangays in Zamboanga City were forced to flee their homes following severe flooding caused by heavy rains on Saturday. The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office reported that 2,374 individuals are currently temporarily staying in evacuation centers.
The evacuees primarily come from barangays Sta. Maria, Lunzuran, Tugbungan, Boalan, Guiwan, and Tumaga. As of just past midnight on Sunday, only three evacuation centers remained open, with 50 families still seeking shelter at the center located in Barangay Tumaga.
The flooding was attributed to a southwest monsoon that was enhanced by Tropical Storm Danas, which brought isolated rains and thunderstorms to the Zamboanga Peninsula, as well as the nearby regions of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the flooding.
