The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is considering Ormoc City as host of the 2027 Batang Pinoy national championships as new facilities strengthen its capacity to stage major sporting events.

PSC Chair John Patrick Gregorio said the city’s continuing investments in sports infrastructure could also position it for other national and international competitions.

He said bringing large events outside Metro Manila would give young athletes in the provinces greater access to high-level competition and training opportunities.

Gregorio noted that many members of Philippine national teams come from the provinces, making regional sports development a key priority.

Leyte Rep. Richard Gomez said a Php 110-million track-and-field facility at the Ormoc City Sports Complex in Barangay Juaton was expected to be completed by late next year.

Since 2022, the national and city governments have invested about Php 2 billion in the complex, which includes a badminton center, padel courts, skateboard park and convention center.

Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez said the city would continue sharing its facilities and experience with neighboring local governments to strengthen grassroots sports across Eastern Visayas.

Ormoc’s sports program began with modest support for local athletes in 2016. The city has since won the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association overall championship for seven consecutive years.
