Opening of classes in Ilocos Norte ‘peaceful, successful’ –DepEd

The opening of classes in the 364 public elementary and high schools in Ilocos Norte on Monday proceeded smoothly, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

“So far, the opening of classes in the schools is generally peaceful and successful,” said Valerie Talamayan, designated information officer of DepEd Schools Division of Ilocos Norte, in a phone interview with the Philippine News Agency. She noted the strong support from local government units, barangay officials, and parents and teachers association (PTA) members in assisting schools.

As of Monday morning, the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte reported a total of 67,899 learners enrolled out of a target of 85,133. Talamayan indicated that the enrollment numbers are expected to rise as the enrollment period continues until Friday.

At the Eladio V. Barangan Memorial Elementary School in San Nicolas town, Principal Dr. Rolen Oracion shared that the school welcomed learners with a song-and-dance number from teachers and provided an orientation on school rules and policies. Additionally, school supplies and used clothes from family sponsors in Hawaii were distributed to selected beneficiaries. “We look forward to a year filled with learning, creativity, and achievement,” Oracion stated.

Noralyn Dela Cruz, principal of Laoag Central Elementary School, reported that their school’s opening was also without issues. Meanwhile, teachers at Salanap Elementary School in Pinili town expressed their excitement in welcoming students, resuming interactive classroom discussions immediately after the flag-raising ceremony and a simple welcome program. “Thank you so much to our parents and community partners for preparing our school and for generously sharing their blessings for our learners,” said Principal Aileen Rambaud.
